The Fifth DOE-CAS Joint Coordinating Committee Meeting was held in Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics on June 20th, 2016. The meeting was co-chaired by the Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Dr. WANG Enge and the Director of the Office of Science of the US Department of Energy (DOE), Dr. Cherry Murray.
Dr. Wang extended his warm welcome to the high-level delegation of the DOE's Office of Science led by Dr. Murray. He noted that cooperation between DOE, an important partner, and the CAS first started in the field of high energy physics, and gradually extended to other fields such as nuclear physics, nuclear fusion, basic energy science, and climate science, and has achieved remarkable results. Dr. Wang spoke highly of the meeting mechanism of the DOE-CAS Joint Coordinating Committee. He hopes that such a platform will play a larger role in further promoting the Sino-US cooperation in frontier sciences, and yield more and better results. Dr. Murray reviewed the overall progress of and potential opportunities for cooperation in priority areas, noting that DOE attaches great importance to cooperation with the CAS, and encourages collaboration of diversified forms under the Joint Commission mechanism of basic energy sciences with a view of and win-win and mutual benefit, and enhancing the development of world science.
At the meeting, both Chinese and American experts made presentations on high-energy physics, basic energy sciences, nuclear fusion, nuclear physics, and climate science, reported on progress in bilateral cooperation and further cooperation plans, and explored future opportunities for cooperation in various fields. Mr. CAO Jinghua, director of the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS also spoke on the overall cooperation between the two sides.
Present at meeting are persons-in-charge from the CAS Bureau of International Cooperation, Bureau of Frontier Sciences and Education, the Institute of High-energy Physics, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, Institute of Plasma Physics, Institute of Modern Physics, Institute of Atmospheric Physics and Institute of Physics, and representatives of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
On June 21st, the DOE delegation paid a visit to the National Center for Protein Science Shanghai, ShanghaiTech University, and Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility.
